Welcome to Hai Nan Village Lei Cha, a delightful eatery nestled in the heart of Kuching’s Happy Garden. This charming restaurant specializes in a traditional dish known as Lei Cha, which translates to "pounded tea." A culinary experience rich in flavor and history, Hai Nan Village Lei Cha presents this dish in ways that are both authentic and uniquely satisfying.

As you enter this cozy spot tucked away in a residential area, you are greeted by a serene ambiance, adorned with greenery that creates a perfect backdrop for a casual meal. Seating is limited yet comfortable, inviting you to enjoy your food in a warm, friendly environment.

The menu features the legendary Lei Cha, available in both normal and large sizes. For those who are adventurous, you may want to try the cold version – a refreshing twist on a classic dish. Each bowl is a colorful array of finely chopped vegetables paired harmoniously with unpolished rice. The bitter broth is a standout here; deep and rich in flavor, with a pleasantly surprising sweet aftertaste that lingers on the palate. Customers rave about the balance of seasoning, ensuring that each spoonful is neither too salty nor overwhelming. Indeed, you’ll find yourself savoring the last drop of that umami-rich broth, just as Swee Kee Chew wisely suggests.

In addition to the delicious Lei Cha, Hai Nan Village also offers soothing herbal tea, a delightful complement that is slightly sweetened to balance the meal. And let’s not forget the divine coconut jelly – light, smooth, and refreshingly airy, it serves as the perfect closure to a hearty meal.

Customer reviews consistently highlight the authentic quality and depth of flavor found here, with Andrew Lee pointing out the distinctively bitter notes that differentiate this Lei Cha from others in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. As Nicholas Chan describes, this gem of a restaurant truly captures the essence of Lei Cha that leaves a lasting impression.

So, whether you are a devoted fan of traditional Malaysian cuisine or new to the experience, Hai Nan Village Lei Cha deserves a spot on your culinary itinerary. Make your way to 151, Jalan Tengah, Happy Garden, Kuching, and prepare for a uniquely satisfying dining experience that is both nourishing and unforgettable.

Shop is tucked away inside a house off the main road. One of the best Lei cha I’ve had. Soup is very well seasoned but not overly salty, and the balance with the rice is very good too. They also serve herbal tea (slightly sweetened) and coconut jelly as drinks. Lei cha comes in normal and large sizes - I went for the large and it’s not too big for a single serving. They also have a cold version which you can take away - the soup has to be reconstituted with hot water before eating. Accepts eWallets (Grab, S Pay) and offers Grab delivery too. Update: Been here for many times and it’s consistently good. They now sell a ikan bilis sambal for RM15, and gave me a small free sample with my meal. It’s nice

If you like Lei Cha (a dish with different vegetables cut into small pieces with bitter soup made from tea), this is a must try! It might taste a little more bitter than other lei cha in JB or KL, but they are still bearable.

The best there is in town that comes with unpolished rice; plus a choice of normal or bitter broth. Savor till the last drop of the umami broth.

One of the best lei cha in town. The rich, aromatic of lei cha gravy is full of depth and flavour. The fresh coconut pudding so light, smooth, and refreshing.

Love the Leicha.. One of the best I have tasted in Kuching.. There are 2 versions - the bitter and the normal. The after-taste for the bitter one is sweet unlike other places - bitter to the end.. . As this is operated from the carporch area of the house, seating capacity is not so big but quite cosy with plants surrounding.. Highly recommended to try..

After so many years not able to be back to Kuching, the food that I missed most is not Kolo Noodle or Sarawak Laksa, but this Hakka Lei Cha! They are like the best of all Lei Cha that i have tried, miles beyond any of those I had in Singapore, or even those famous ones in West Malaysia (i.e. the Kulai one). I am not sure what magic ingredients in the recipe, but they are definitely not vegan/vegetarian because they added dried shrimps into the soup base. Other than that, I remember an article saying they had 7 types of herbs in the soup, and optional to add bitterness. Oh please get add the bitter herb into the soup, it is what transcends their soup into God-tier Lei Cha for me! As for their mains, the ingredients seem seasonal except the Cai Po (preserved dried veg) and Pucuk Manis vegetable, even the rice seems seasonal as they are different for each visit I made? For visitors like us that want to bring their soup back home by flight, they are very experienced and they pack the frozen soup base nicely to be sold!

Still my favourite place to get Luicha lunch in Kuching. There's another place in town that serve luicha (a small cafe called The Fig Tree at Wayang street), it was different with more cha taste while the one at Jalan Intan here has that 'sort of creamy' taste to it. Rich in the nicest way possible. I like that they have bitter version, which once you get use to it, the taste seems to become sweater.
